Campus Security Management Team
Campus Security’s mandate is to provide facility security, proactive patrols, community awareness & outreach, crime analysis & reduction programs and the installation, maintenance and monitoring of electronic alarm, CCTV & access control systems.
Ali was born in Iran and moved to Canada after finishing his school and completing his military service in the Iranian Police Services. On his arrival in Canada Ali found an interest in the security field and worked in the public sector as a Security Manager, Investigator and Security advisor for a number of high profile organizations. Ali then moved into the private sector and conducted workshops on conflict management, workplace violence prevention, Threat Assessment and Threat Management for private and public sector employers in both Canada and Australia. Just prior to his arrival at UBC, Ali was appointed to a senior security role for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic.
Ali manages Campus Security’s operations , which is staffed by Patrol Officers who watch over a campus of over 1000 acres of land, including approximately 550 buildings. The Patrol Officers play a key role of being UBC representatives to the community by being visible and vigilant. The campus is patrolled 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, on foot, bike and vehicle. Ali has supported the Security Operations since he started at UBC Campus Security in 2010.
Ali brings over 25 years of experience and knowledge in Law Enforcement and Security to UBC Campus Security.
Access Services Manager
John was born in the Okanagan, and grew up in Vancouver. Prior to joining UBC, John worked in the consumer electronics and security industries as a service technician. He’s been with UBC for 20 years, starting as a Secure Access Technician. He has since held project management and management roles and now leads the Access Services team responsible for access and security systems solutions on campus.
John’s worked in the security industry for most of his career, and his education as an electronic engineering technologist provides him with a strong technical background for his responsibilities at UBC. He enjoys his continuing professional and leadership development.
Assistant Manager, Secure Access
Aarif was born in Vancouver, British Columbia and brings 13 years of security integrator experience from the private sector, which includes roles in technical, sales, operations and management. He also holds a Physical Security Professional certification through ASIS International. He is currently completing a Bachelor of Technology Management degree through BCIT.
Aarif is responsible for the application of departmental security strategies, development of project plans, cost estimates and manages execution of locksmith and security electronics projects for UBC clients and stakeholders.
Assistant Operations Manager
Sammy, originally from Hong Kong, moved to Canada at the age of seven, and has spent most of his life in Vancouver. In 2009, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from UBC. Joining the department in September 2015, Sammy is the newest addition to the management team. He brings to the team more than 10 years of experience in operations and account management in both the security and parking industries.
Beginning as a parking ambassador in 2008, Sammy worked as an Operations Supervisor, Area Manager, Events Manager and lastly, Operations Manager at Impark. Sammy managed a team of 3 managers, 50 team members and a portfolio of 32 parking and valet facilities. His main responsibilities as manager were business development, P&L analysis, forecast/budgets, people management and executive reporting. Prior to parking, Sammy worked as a licensed security officer and loss prevention officer for over 5 years at various commercial, residential and event venues in Vancouver.
