We at Safety & Risk Services and in the VPFO portfolio want to ensure we create a sense of safety, trust and security among all campus users. We can only achieve this when we recognize and address racism and unconscious bias at an individual and institutional level.
UBC President and Vice-Chancellor Santa Ono recently released a statement about systemic racism at UBC where he called for an external review of polices and practices within Campus Security. I believe this review will help ensure the appropriate internal structures are in place so all members of the UBC community experience safety, trust and security.
As an important first step, all team members within Safety & Risk Services and the VPFO portfolio (over 1,300 people across 10 departments) will take part in an ongoing program of meaningful training about racism and unconscious bias, starting in the coming weeks.
I hope these first steps and the leadership of Professor Ono will help to reassure UBC that we will be thoughtful, purposeful and work hard to provide the high-quality security services that our campus deserves.
