The University of British Columbia takes all matters of campus security very seriously, which is why we commissioned an external independent review of campus security policies and procedures in 2020. The review has made a number of findings and recommendations which we have shared with our university community.
The report’s recommendations include the following for Campus Security:
- Policy Enhancements relating to opportunities to improve the standard operating procedures for Campus Security on both campuses
- Opportunities to improve the training provided to Campus Security including building understanding on racial discrimination and racial harassment
- Appoint a separate body or office to investigate complaints against campus security.
- The increase of diversity among Campus Security leadership (particularly at UBC Okanagan), to build a campus security team that better reflects the racial diversity of the campus community
- The enhanced engagement of security personnel for UBC Okanagan by transitioning patrol officers to UBC employees
Many of these recommendations are already being implemented. In addition to the recommendations specific to Campus Security, the reviewers also provided institutional recommendations focused on policy enhancements, and training for the UBC community. These recommendations are aligned and consistent with the current institutional plans underway.
